Automatic takes advantage of the very cool OpenType feature ‘Stylistic Alternatives’. With this feature switched on patterns can be created almost automatically.

Each letter contains up to four alternative shapes. All the characters can be viewed in the Glyphs window. The OpenType feature can be switched on here: Window >Type >OpenType >Stylistic Alternatives.
